Artist FAITH RINGGOLD – A Modern Quilt-Maker

MUSIC + HISTORY + ART + STORYTELLING

When Faith was born in 1930 in NYC, the Harlem Renaissance was taking place. During this exciting time, Faith’s parents exposed her to a world of jazz musicians, writers & poets.  She was a budding visual artist herself!

She was also a pioneer – insisting to her parents that she attend City College at a time when it wasn’t even allowing women to enroll, let alone an African American woman.  But she persevered and got her degree from City College!

She has had an adventurous life and has many talents.  Faith was a college professor, has authored many children’s books, been a mixed media artist, quilt maker and activist.

Faith is very well-known for her story-quilts, they tell stories from her childhood.  “Tar Beach” is one of those.  For our art project we’ll create mixed media quilts that tell a story or a memory from your life!  

We’ll also listen to Faith read from her book by the same name, Tar Beach, and hear a jazz recording played by a childhood friend.  After the Harlem Renaissance, he went on to become a world famous saxophone player!
